The best placement of the eye screw depends on how the Aging-At-Home device will be used.

Most importantly, in our prototype, the eye screw must be screwed into the middle of a 2X6 or 2x8 ceiling beam. The size of the ceiling beam (or cross member) can be determined by looking in the attic above the area where the eye screw is to be placed. If the size and position of the beam could not have been determined, we would not have used our transfer device prototype.

Eye Screw Placement on Ceiling

Above Toilet in Bathroom

The eye screw can be placed above the toilet in the bathroom if the person will use a mobile toileting chair that wheels over the bathroom toilet. Here the device can be used to raise the person so their clothes may be adjusted before toileting. They may also be raised after toileting to clean them and adjust their clothes before exiting the bathroom.

Placement For Wheelchair or
Commode Transfer Only

We positioned the eye screw at least four feet from any room wall if the device is to be used solely for wheelchair, commode, shower chair, etc. transfer.

Placement For Homecare Bed
and Wheelchair Transfer

The eye screw would be placed at least five feet from any room wall if there will be transfer to and from a homecare bed.
